2012!

I made my annual post new year trip to Barnes and Noble today during lunch to pick up my 50% off wall and desktop calenders.  For 50% who could resist?!
I thougt about skipping the wall calendar this year but only two days back at work and I caugt myself constantly glancing up at the empty spot on my wall to check the dates for various reasons.  I know I could just as easily looked the dates up on my computer but its just not the same.  In the years past I’ve always gotten a beach/tropical themed calendar but this year it was slim pickings!  Everyone else must have caught on and waited until after the new year to pick theirs up too! I settled on a cute overload one…kittens, puppies, hedgehogs and hamsters…whats there not to love?!
For the last three years my daily calendar of choice has been Garfield. My all time fav! But just as luck would have it, it was again slim pickings.  Get Fuzzy will just have to do for this year.

Now of to bundle up and get ready to brace the cold outside!

Testing…

Happy new year!
Testing out the photogrid app the boy told me about!   Maybe this year’s resolution should be to get more posts/pictures/updates on this blog!

Our Morning Run

Just a little quickie post from my phone as I sit in Hooters while the boy watches the Giants game. I brought a tv tuner for my laptop along with us but he forgot to bring a coaxial cable and the dinky antennae that it came with doesn’t work that well.
We went out for a morning run on the boardwalk today and this was a view of the beach…I can’t wait to come back with my real camera!
I could wake up to this evey morning!

my not so green thumb

Lucky bamboo plants are notoriously easy to maintain…but I have I have yet to be able to keep one alive.  After two past failed attempts, I think I should just give up, no? (thank goodness both times they were favors and I didn’t have to pay for them!)

Earlier this month the boy and I attended a wedding where the favors were lucky bamboo stalks. (yay?) We ended up going home with four stalks…I decided to leave three with his mom and I took one home to give one last shot.  I was told by the boy’s mom: “All you need to do is put it in a container and change the water every so often…”  Uh huh…yeah sure…
At home I found an old container and some acrylic beads so I plopped my stalk in and filled it with some water…a few days later one of the leaves started to turn brownish yellow and the leaves felt a little sticky.  *sigh!   I was ready to give the stalk back to the boy’s mom and let her revive it!  But I decided to pluck off the dying leaf and rinse off the whole plant.

Fast forward to last night at Shecky’s with E.  There was a vendor there selling these gel floral beads.  (I had purchased these beads a few years back online from a different vendor with the intent on incorporating them into the centerpieces for dad’s 60 birthday but that was a complete FAIL!)  This time the vendor here had so many more color options and had various show specials.  A lightbulb went off and I walked away with floral beads in 4 colors – pink, purple, black and clear and another bamboo stalk!

Floral beads can be used as an alternative to water in a vase.  The beads are about 2mm round when they are dry.  Soak them in water for 6-8 hours and they swell to the size of a marble!  Drain off excess water, dump them in a vase and stick your flowers in!  They claim to stay hydrated for 4-5 months (depending on the humidity in the air) and will slowly shrink back to their original size…and then you can soak them again to keep using them!

I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking…

I headed up to bed after this last picture and 8 hours later…

I have a much smaller vase for the second stalk so I soaked much less of the pink/black/clear combination.  It still ended up being about double of what I actually need so I’ll just let them dehydrate on their own…or find another lucky bamboo that wants to come home with me? :)

I got purple because that is mom’s favorite color so I’ll let her decide what she wants to do with that one.  I am thinking of taking the pink one into work with me!  Hopefully these little guys will stay alive this time around!

And for those who know me…does it surprise you that I have the urge to separate all of the colors?!  I might just have to layer the colors in the vase instead of having it mixed like that!

He’s holding the mayo for my sandwich! :)   and his beak turns into the spatula! Genius, no?! What will the Japanese come up with next?!
I like to toast my bread when I bring a sandwich in for lunch…so putting mayo on when I’m prepping the sandwich at home is out of the question.
This little guy let’s me take just the right amount of mayo into work instead of lugging in the whole bottle! image

and it was roast beef and white american cheese if you were wondering…=)

How AWESOME would this be!?

I remember loving ball pits when I was younger…and then becoming horrified when I was old enough to realize how gross and dirty they were…

six flags great adventure for Ron’s birthday!

The thought of Great Adventure brings nostalgia to many of us…mainly because its been YEARS since most of us have gone.  For Ron’s birthday this year we decided to take a Friday off from work and head over to check out all of the new rides (and some favorites!).

Our first ride of the day was Kingda Ka.  After waiting on line for about 20 minutes, the ride stopped running…an engineer walked the track and within 30 minutes it was up and running again!  Now let me say this…I’m a pretty big chicken when it comes to coasters!  I’ll go on almost anything but the entire queuing time I’ll have sweaty palms and heart palpitations!   And not to mention for 95% of the ride my eyes will be closed! :)

Kingda Ka was new for almost everyone in our group.  Its one of those straight up….and straight down rides.  I found this clip on youtube:

The two times I did open my eyes on the ride, all I managed to see was BLUE from the sky!  I’d imagine this ride would be even scarier at night…

And yes, if you were wondering, the dweeb in me youtube’d all of the coasters the night before!

After the ride we walked around a bit and got to see the two new lion cubs they have!

And somewhere along the way we managed to loose Ron and he was replaced by Super Ron!

Overall it was a pretty fun day…we lucked out with the weather…low 80′s with equally low humidity!  Always a plus in my book! We got to go on all the rides we wanted with minimal waiting time…with the exception of Kingda Ka, I don’t think we waited more than 30-45 minutes for a ride!

A day spent at Great Adventure isn’t complete until you blow at least $40 on the boardwalk games!  Here’s our loot:

You can imagine the antics that that angry bird came with…
We probably won’t be going to GA again for another several years…not much has changed since the last time we were there.  Cedar Point next year anyone???  :-)

and like that summer is unofficially over…

time to break out the chunky sweaters, burgundy nail polishes, and holiday prep!

as much as i love the beach and sunshine, i really do hate the summer…well to be more specific…ny summers.  being sweaty and sticky with 90% humidity is really not my thing…if i want summer and sun i’d much prefer to hop a plane to somewhere nice.

fall is my favorite season…not too hot and not yet bone chilling cold!

maybe an apple picking excursion will be in the works soon!  i’d love to take some pictures at the orchards!

blog revamp!

As stated in a previous post, I found myself a blog designer!

After going through dozens of themes – some completely uncustomizable, and some broken, I decided to go for it and have a custom theme made!

I have been working with Myla from Design Me Pretty over the last few weeks and she’s created a theme that I am absolutely in love with! I wanted something clean, simple and uniquely me.

When I approached her, I provided her with a sketch of what I envisioned my blog to look like.  And after a few rounds of going back and forth and some minor tweaks here and there I now have a theme that I adore!

This is sure to get me on the blogging bandwagon!   Since I’m not on facebook, I figured keeping an updated blog is the best way to retain my memories and share my thoughts.  I have always kept a diary <note to the boy: a diary that you will never see!> and as we move on with technology, this is my little virtual diary…welcome to my little corner of the interwebs!

For those of you who are reading this through RSS and are too lazy to click on over to the page, here is a snapshot of what my new theme looks like:

And here’s the original sketch I provided Myla:

Not bad, huh?  :)

So for anyone that is in need of a new theme, or any designing services – she does invitations and birth announcements too – Myla from Design Me Pretty comes HIGHLY recommended!

Happy Blogging!
